NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A celebration is being held in North Charleston to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Naval Reserve.

The event runs all day on Saturday at the city’s Waterfront Park.

It includes a flyover of planes piloted by members of the Reserve and tours of the USS Shamal, a coastal patrol ship.

There will also be speeches, military demonstrations and music by a Navy band. The event includes food vendors, activities for children and evening fireworks.

The celebration is sponsored by City of North Charleston, the Navy Operational Support Center Charleston and the Navy League of Charleston.



The park is the site of the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, dedicated to those who served at the base which closed 20 years ago.
