MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Firefighters along the South Carolina coast are installing smoke alarms in the homes of the needy this weekend.
Personnel from the Awendaw McClellanville Consolidated Fire District and the Office of the State Fire Marshall are installing alarms in homes in McClellanville in northern Charleston County on Saturday.
The firefighters have about 500 smoke alarms paid for through grants available for installation. McClellanville is one of ten communities statewide participating in the 2015 Smoke Alarm Blitz.
The smoke alarms are distributed on the basis of need and other factors including the number of fire fatalities per capita.
