NEW YORK (AP) - A maintenance worker has been killed on the job at the Coney Island Houses in Brooklyn.

New York City Housing Authority Chairwoman Shola Olatoye (Oh-LAH’-twoh-yay) says the authority is “deeply saddened by the loss” of 31-year-old Toni Jackson on Saturday.

The authority says Jackson was fatally injured while performing maintenance duties. A statement from the authority does not provide any details.

Jakwon (JAY’-kwon) Rivers, a shop steward with Jackson’s union, Teamsters Local 237, says a faulty hoist fell on her.

Rivers is demanding an investigation into safety practices at the authority.

He says Jackson was the mother of two children.
