CHICAGO (AP) - Fellow Cuban and White Sox star Alexei Ramirez has paid tribute to the late Minnie Minoso, saying baseball’s first black Latino player paved the way for him and others.
In a message read out during a funeral service in Chicago, Ramirez said that without Minoso’s willingness to accept taunts and slights, “none of us would be major leaguers.”
The Havana native died Sunday. He was believed to be 90.
Hundreds of people were attending Minoso’s funeral Saturday at Holy Family Church in Chicago.
Ramirez was in Arizona and said that as he takes the field Saturday for a spring training exhibition game, he’ll proudly remember Minoso, whom he said was like a father to him.
