FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) - A state Department of Corrections inmate being held at the Union Parish Detention Center is facing three counts of battery of a correctional center employee after throwing urine on three guards.

The sheriff’s office says 39-year-old Joseph D. McLaughlin was booked last week.

Sheriff Dusty Gates tells KNOE-TV (https://bit.ly/1wSgiik ) McLaughlin was put in a holding cell after being caught taking food out of the kitchen where he worked. The guards reported he was upset and began fighting them.

Gates says as the guards tried to place McLaughlin in a restraining chair, he was chemically sprayed. McLaughlin then made his way to a toilet, cupped his hands and started splashing urine on the guards.

McLaughlin told investigators he dipped his hands into the toilet to wash the chemical from his eyes.
