DERBY, Vt. (AP) - The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department says an off-duty K-9 dog has been struck and killed by a vehicle in Derby.

The German Shepherd, Kilo, was with his handler, Deputy Tyler Jacobs, when he was struck around 1 p.m. Sunday. He died of his injuries at the scene.

The dog came to the department last August as an 8-week-old puppy. He and Jacobs had just completed half of a six-week drug detection class at the Vermont Police Academy, where he was considered one of the top dogs in the class.
