CONVENT, La. (AP) - State police say a Vacherie woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident in St. James Parish.

It happened just before 6 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 3213 and Louisiana Highway 3215.

WAFB-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1E48kCk ) investigators at the scene said 24-year-old Corey Newton was driving east on 3125, while 25-year-old Brittany Harris was driving north on 3213. As both vehicles approached the intersection, Newton ran through a red light and hit Harris’ vehicle on the driver’s side. Her vehicle then left the road and hit a utility pole.

Harris was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the crash Newton ran into the woods. He was arrested a short time later and booked with negligent homicide, reckless operation and hit-and-run driving.
