ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Officials say two “absolutely critical” tax renewals for the Rapides Parish School Board are among elections to be decided Saturday.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1E1mSzI) the two parish-wide school taxes generate more than $7 million a year for school operations and maintenance.

School Superintendent Nason Authement said the taxes are vital to the school district.

School Board Proposition No. 1 is a continuation of a property tax that brings in about $5.4 million annually year for operating schools.

Proposition No. 2 is a continuation of property tax that to generates about $1.5 million a year to maintain and improve school buildings, equipment and facilities.

If approved by voters, the taxes would be in effect from 2016 through 2025.
