ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) - Adelaide United ended Brisbane’s reign in Australian football’s A-League on Friday, beating the defending champions 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs.

Awer Mabil scored the winning goal in the 86th minute, volleying home Miguel Palanca’s cross to end a break initiated by Sergio Cirio.

Adelaide took the lead in the seventh minute with a free kick by Craig Goodwin which dipped into the bottom corner of the net. Brisbane equalized in the 27th with a solo effort from Thomas Broich.

Adelaide will play at Sydney FC in next weekend’s semifinals, while premiership winners the Melbourne Victory will play the winner of Sunday’s match between Wellington and Melbourne City.
