CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered state flags at the Capitol Complex in Charleston and at all state-owned facilities in Brooke County to be lowered in memory of former state Sen. John Chernenko.

Services for Chernenko are scheduled Friday at the Chambers Funeral Home in Wellsburg. The Wellsburg resident died Monday at age 90.

Tomblin has ordered flags lowered from dawn to dusk on Friday.

President John F. Kennedy appointed Chernenko as a U.S. marshal for the state’s northern district in 1961. He served until 1969.

Chernenko was elected to the state Senate in 1982. He served until 1994.
