PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A former veteran Portland police officer has been sentenced to 60 years in jail after pleading guilty to stealing money from family members.

WCSH reports (https://on.wcsh6.com/1JGvzXX ) that Bruce Chase pleaded guilty Friday to theft and misuse of entrusted property.

He was a Portland officer for 18 years and retired in good standing 15 years ago.

Investigators say he convinced his sister-in-law to give him power of attorney when attended the funeral of her husband. The then siphoned money - nearly $160,000 - from her accounts.

WCSH reports he has paid back the money he took and spent on gambling, among other expenses.
