MONTICELLO, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana prosecutor has cleared four officers in the fatal shooting of a man who led them on a chase after he took a hostage following a bank robbery.

WLFI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1E2F9wy ) White County Prosecutor Robert Guy said Friday that the officers from Indiana State Police and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department were justified in shooting Don Oneal Smith.

The 29-year-old Smith was fatally shot April 9 in the northern Indiana town of Monon after he allegedly robbed a bank in Watseka, Illinois, took a hostage and led police on a chase through several northwestern Indiana counties.

The hostage was eventually freed unharmed, but Smith was shot after police said he pointed his firearm at officers.

Authorities say Smith was from the South Bend/Elkhart area.
