SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Army National Guard says a central Kentucky unit is preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.

A statement says a departure ceremony is being held Saturday in Shelbyville for the 1163rd Area Support Medical Company. The 18 soldiers will train for several weeks at Fort Hood, Texas, before traveling to Afghanistan where they will provide medical support to coalition forces.

The Kentucky National Guard says it is the third time the unit has deployed in support of the Global War on Terror.
