LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces City Councilor is fighting for his right to defend himself in a recall campaign.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/1JeaC3h ) that attorneys for Gill Sorg filed documents Wednesday asking a judge to allow him to be a party in a case seeking to recall him and two other councilors for being too politically liberal.

The documents also logged their arguments opposing the filings by the political action committee New Mexicans for a Better Tomorrow, the group behind the recall.

PAC member Robert Burow initiated the case April 16, challenging how the city clerk’s office verified signatures gathered by recall proponents.

The clerk’s office says the group failed to get enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election against Sorg and councilors Nathan Small and Olga Pedroza.
