HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A lawyer representing a Huntsville police officer accused of using excessive force says his client was protecting others during the encounter.

Joe Lampley spoke Friday on behalf of his client, Officer Brett Russell. Federal prosecutors said 48-year-old Russell is accused of depriving a man of his rights during a December 2011 arrest.

Prosecutors say Russell falsely reported that the man kicked and tried head butting officers while he was being taken to a patrol car. Prosecutors say Russell is accused of punching the man and striking a blow to his body with his knee but leaving those details out of the incident report.

WHNT-TV reports Lampley as saying (https://bit.ly/1QV2Uk6 ) Russell is an exemplary officer. Lampley says Russell hit the man to subdue him during his arrest.
