AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) - A 67-year-old central New York man has admitted to his role in a scheme that bilked nearly $140,000 from scores of people.

The Citizen of Auburn (https://bit.ly/1PcxlOV ) reports that Harold Monell of Weedsport pleaded guilty Thursday in Cayuga County Court to first-degree scheme to defraud.

Monell admitted he took part in a scam with Daniel Humberstone that took in $139,000 from more than 100 people.

The 41-year-old Humberstone, also of Weedsport, told the victims he was due to receive $1 million from New York state and needed funds to help cover the fees blocking him from accessing the settlement. He’s serving up to five years in state prison for his role in the scheme.

Monell will be sentenced to probation if he makes at least $3,000 restitution before he’s sentenced in August.
