NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a man who sped through a Lincoln Tunnel tube while it was closed for maintenance has been arrested on DWI and other charges.

Port Authority police say Mario Saldana of the Bronx was arrested on the West Side Highway early Friday.

Police say they had signaled the driver that the entrance in Weehawken, New Jersey, was closed. They say he went in anyway, then smashed through a gate while exiting the tunnel on the Manhattan side.

Spokesman Joe Pentangelo (pehn-TAN’-juh-loh) says arresting officers also charged Saldana with leaving the scene, failure to comply with police, driving without a license and reckless driving.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office said Friday afternoon that Saldana was awaiting a court appearance.

The name of his attorney was not immediately known.
