HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say one person has died and another suffered serious injuries in a head-on collision involving at least two vehicles on Route 5 in Holyoke.

Police Lt. James Albert says one man, believed to be older, had to be extricated after being trapped in one of the vehicles that crashed at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police closed Route 5 north between the Mount Tom Access Road and the Easthampton line to investigate the accident.

The names of the victims were not immediately made public.

The cause remains under investigation.
