OTHO, Iowa (AP) - A Webster County man escaped a mobile home fire but was only able to carry out a hamper full of clothing.

The Fort Dodge Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/1c2RY46 ) the Thursday afternoon fire in Otho spread from a debris pile to a mobile home where 56-year-old Jim Kikendall was inside paying video games.

Kikendall heard a noise from the back of the home and found an attached shed on fire. He tried to retrieve his wallet, shoes and video game console but had to give up because of the spreading fire’s intense heat.

He grabbed a hamper of laundry and ran out. His other possession in the home burned.

Besides the home, a vehicle also was destroyed.

A neighbor gave him a pair of shoes as he watched crews fight the fire.
