ELMONT, N.Y. (AP) - A man making repairs with a welder has lost three fingers after an explosion in the yard of a Long Island construction company.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1DGwsHV ) the 61-year-old victim suffered burns and injuries to his face, chest and left hand in the blast Thursday morning.

Authorities say he was trying to repair a backhoe at the time. But they’re trying to pin down what exactly caused the explosion.

Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office Head of Fire Investigations James Hickman says officials think there was a buildup of gas that could have caused the blast.

Authorities didn’t identify the victim.

He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
