ATLANTA (AP) - Police say a man died after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a tree during a police chase.

Police tell local media a witness flagged down Capitol police officers and said the pickup was driving erratically near the state Capitol with no lights on. Police say the officers tried to pull the truck over, but the driver didn’t stop.

The driver of the pickup then led officers on a high-speed chase before running off a road in southeast Atlanta. The pickup hit a tree along Moreland Avenue early Friday.

Police say the driver died after the truck burst into flames and officers were unable to rescue him.

Police say the truck had been stolen in Gainesville. The driver’s name was not immediately released.
