SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Education officials in South Bend say they’ll consider lengthening or altering the school day times for the upcoming academic year.

The changes would affect South Bend Community School Corp. students in pre-kindergarten through high school. The district says the changes would “increase the instructional day” for primary students. Officials say the proposed start time of 9 a.m. for middle and high school students would “support the research regarding adolescent sleep.”

Athletic and extra-curricular schedules would change to meet the new class times. Free breakfasts would still be available.

The school board is to consider the changes later this month.
