MANHATTAN, Ill. (AP) - The Midwest Truckers Association says a road in Will County has become a ticket trap for semi-truck drivers.

Matt Wells of the truckers group says the county’s excessive enforcement has pummeled drivers with tickets for exceeding a weight limit. He claims penalties total more than $2.5 million and he’s written to the Illinois Department of Transportation about it.

Wells says Manhattan-Monee Road from U.S. Route 52 to U.S. 45 is an important east-west route for truckers. It takes them over a culvert with a 15-ton weight limit.

Will County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer tells The (Joliet) Herald-News (https://bit.ly/1Q3P7WX ) that traffic sergeants patrol the area because of safety concerns. Hoffmeyer says the weight limit is well marked with signs.

An IDOT spokeswoman says the agency is looking into it.
