RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia’s attorney general is calling for mediation of the dispute over plans to close Sweet Briar College.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1AmL1A9 ) that Deputy Attorney General John Daniel proposed the talks in a letter Thursday to attorneys for the college and the plaintiffs in two lawsuits seeking to stop the closing. He said Attorney General Mark Herring expects “open, honest and transparent communication” about the closing plan and the feasibility of other options.

Daniel said the state would provide an independent mediator. He suggested a meeting by May 14.

Representatives of both sides of the dispute indicated a willingness to participate in the talks.

Sweet Briar’s board voted to permanently close the private women’s college this August.
