LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A Lafayette woman who pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the smothering death of her baby has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1ON8CWE ) that Raven Senegal, 21, received the minimum sentence in the death of Miracle Senegal, who was almost 6 months old when she died Jan. 29, 2014. She was sentenced Thursday.

Raven Senegal admitted no guilt in her no contest plea and will get credit for time served. She’s been held in the Lafayette Parish prison since her 2014 arrest.

Senegal was arrested and charged with first-degree murder two months after the baby’s death, when an autopsy revealed Miracle’s cause of death was asphyxiation by plastic bag.

Prosecutors said they reduced Senegal’s charge to manslaughter because she suffered abuse as a child.
