AURORA, Ill. (AP) - The mayor of Illinois’ second-largest city says won’t seek a fourth term in 2017.

Aurora Mayor Thomas Weisner tells the (Aurora) Beacon-News (https://trib.in/1J2ouzP ) his ongoing battle colon cancer is a factor.

The 65-year-old was diagnosed in 2007. The disease went into remission, but came back in 2008 and he’s been “fighting it ever since.” He says he’s had effective treatment, but wants to explore new options.

Weisner says he wants to make his intentions known since the 2015 election is finished and he’s been asked about his future.

Weisner has worked at City Hall for nearly three decades. He first ran for mayor in 2004.

In his last two years as mayor, he says he’s going to focus solely on Aurora, stepping back from regional organizations and advocating in Springfield.
