CHICAGO (AP) - Cardinal Francis George completed the manuscript for his final book just nine days before his death.

The collection of eight essays is to be published in June under the title “A Godly Humanism: Clarifying the Hope That Lies Within.” The essays are based on lectures he gave while serving as Chicago’s archbishop.

George died April 17 after years of treatment for cancer.

Trevor Lipscombe is director of Catholic University of America Press. He says the book was “very close to (George’s) heart” and that the retired archbishop chose to spend the time he had left working on the manuscript.

The Chicago Tribune reports (https://trib.in/1Qw3Zxu ) that George’s final book explores the role of reason and intellect in the Catholic faith. It also explains the influence of recent popes on George’s ministry.
