MOULTON, Ala. (AP) - The Lawrence County commission has rejected a two-cent sales tax increase and moved to cut the government’s budget.

The Decatur Daily (https://bit.ly/1P9aoS8 ) reports the cuts would range from a 20 percent cut in payroll to reductions in hourly pay.

Commission members will discuss spending plans again Friday and vote on the cuts during a special meeting May 22. If approved, the reductions will take effect June 8.

The county is facing a shortfall that could reach $700,000 by the end of the financial year on Sept. 30. The shortfall has grown since International Paper Co. closed last year.
