COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A man was killed and two women were injured in a two-car crash in central Ohio.

Columbus police say 27-year-old Michael Bates died in the head-on collision shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday on the city’s east side.

Police said in a statement Sunday that Bates was driving south when a north-bound car driven by 37-year-old Patricia Haynes crossed the center line and struck Bates’ car. Police say Bates died at the scene.

Police say Haynes and 40-year-old Shirley Walton, a passenger in Bates’ car were taken to hospitals. Their conditions weren’t released.

Investigators said they didn’t know what caused Haynes’ car to veer over the center line into the southbound lane. They are continuing to investigate.

Bates’ death was the 20th traffic fatality in Columbus this year.
