RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An inmate who ran from a highway work crew in Surry County last month has been arrested in Florida.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety said in a statement that 58-year-old John Okdie was a minimum-custody inmate assigned to Wilkes Correctional Center when he ran from the work crew on April 28.

Officials said Okdie became a suspect in a string of burglaries in Ocala, Florida, but ran when police attempted to question him. He was arrested after a struggle, and after being booked as a John Doe, police identified him by a fingerprint match and learned he was a prison escapee.

Okdie now faces numerous burglary charges in the Ocala area and has a first court appearance scheduled for Monday. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
