CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A Charlotte woman is charged with misdemeanor child abuse and reckless driving to endanger following a wreck on Interstate 85 that injured seven people, including five children.

The Charlotte Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1RroD3q ) 28-year-old Shondara Harris told the N.C. Highway Patrol that she intended to get onto the Brookshire Freeway but came up too fast on it and swerved trying to exit.

Five people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after Thursday’s accident. Harris was charged on Saturday.

Two adults and five children were in the minivan when it ran off the highway. The patrol says all seven were apparently living in the van.

A spokeswoman at Carolinas Medical Center said at least two of the occupants, a 10-month-old boy and 4-year-old girl, remained in critical condition Saturday.
