EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An East Providence seventh-grader will represent Rhode Island at the National Geographic Bee this week in Washington D.C.

Thirteen-year-old Eli Fulton will be among 54 competitors starting Monday at the 27th annual competition with a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship.

He tells Rhode Island Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1RuZqoH ) the farthest he’s traveled is to see grandparents in Alabama, but he studies distant places for hours each day.

He says he expects a tense felling at the competition.

Fulton is homeschooled.

The geography competition lasts three days and the final round will broadcast live on the National Geographic Channel.
