DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa authorities have recovered the body of a 12-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming in the Des Moines River.

The Des Moines Police Department says Abou Sheriff was located underwater Monday about 40 yards downstream from where he had last been seen, tangled in branches and debris. Emergency responders were called shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday after Sheriff failed to resurface.

Sgt. Jason Halifax says Sheriff was removed from the river and turned over to the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Sheriff had been swimming with three other kids - ages 9, 11 and 12 - on the north side of the Des Moines River. He jumped in but never reappeared.
