LAKE CITY, Iowa (AP) - Gov. Terry Branstad has declared a disaster emergency in Calhoun County and will head to the area to assess tornado damage and cleanup efforts.

Branstad issued the disaster declaration Monday morning, a day after a tornado tore through Lake City. The twister Sunday night ripped part of the roof off a high school and uprooted trees.

The declaration will let state resources to be used to help in recovery efforts and makes some households eligible for a program that helps pay for repairs.

Branstad says the state has been working to clear debris from roads and clean up other damage.

Branstad planned to arrive in Lake City on Monday afternoon.
