DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Zoo has announced the birth of a new ocelot.

The Dallas Morning News (https://bit.ly/1cohssm ) reports an ocelot kitten, born March 20, will be the third ocelot to live at the Dallas Zoo. It is the fourth ocelot to be born there.

According to a zoo spokeswoman, the mother has been nurturing the kitten in a den box the zoo built to give the pair privacy because ocelots are very secretive animals. A checkup will be conducted in the next few days to determine the kitten’s weight and gender before naming it.

The spokeswoman said ocelots, which are native to Texas and can grow to be about 25 pounds, are threatened as their homes are paved over.
