DETROIT (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan have joined the chief executive of India-based Sakthi Automotive Group to announce details of plans for a $31.9 million industrial site employing 650 people on the city’s southwest side.

The officials said Monday the project will include manufacturing and an engineering training center. It will use two existing buildings, plus the former Southwestern High School.

Sakthi Automotive is part of Sakthi Group, a private conglomerate based in the south Indian city of Coimbatore.

The Michigan Strategic Fund last month approved $3.5 million in incentives for Sakthi Automotive, which has operated in Detroit for five years.

Sakthi Automotive chief executive Lakit Verma says the project will help the company serve customers such as General Motors and Ford.
