BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Ground has been broken for a new Bismarck-area jail for Burleigh and Morton counties.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1P6ld7y ) a groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the two-county jail.

Bids totaling $79 million have been awarded with $3.9 million earmarked for renovations to the existing counties’ jails.

Voters in both counties last year approved an additional half-cent sales tax to pay for the 476-inmate jail in southeast Bismarck.

The facility is expected to start holding prisoners in early 2017.
