SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Ventura County authorities say 10 people may have been exposed to toxic mercury that spilled into a driveway, prompting evacuation of six homes.

County fire Capt. Mike Lindbery says crews were called to a Simi Valley street Monday after a man said his dog had become sick, possibly by contact with an unknown material that may have been sitting in a driveway for at least a month.

Lindbery says the material was about three pounds of mercury - a heavy metal that can cause kidney and other problems.

Six homes were evacuated and residents of two others were told to stay inside while crews in protective gear cleaned up the site.

Lindbery says 10 people, including three firefighters, might have been exposed to the mercury but they showed no symptoms.
