LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) - An 86-year-old man died from injuries suffered in a car crash that killed a woman driving with her two children on Mother’s Day in Laguna Beach, police said Monday.

The man died Sunday evening at a hospital, where had been listed in grave condition, police Capt. Jason Kravetz said. He was not immediately identified.

The man’s Honda Pilot and a Toyota Corolla apparently sideswiped each other shortly after midnight Sunday, causing both vehicles to spin out, Kravetz said.

“For an unknown reason, one of the two veered out of its traffic lane,” Kravetz said. “We don’t know which one it is.”

The Honda flipped over a couple of times before landing on its wheels. The man’s wife, who was also in the car, was not seriously hurt.

The Toyota driver, identified by coroner’s officials as Sandra Maldonado, 31, of Mission Viejo, had to be cut out of the car. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Her children, 8 and 5 years old, were treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released to family.

A 911 caller told dispatchers that he had pulled the children from the car and put them in his vehicle until paramedics arrived.

“I found that very touching, because they’re not having to sit there and see what’s going on with their mother, and he got them out of the area as quickly as possible,” Kravetz said Sunday.

The area has double yellow lines and a single lane of traffic in either direction, police said. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash, he said.
