LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an HIV-infected man who allegedly posed as a policeman to kidnap and molest a 15-year-old girl in Lancaster has pleaded not guilty to attempted rape and other crimes.

City News Service says 41-year-old Joseph Cornett entered pleas Monday to nine felonies and seven misdemeanors.

Prosecutors say the girl was walking home from school on May 6 when Cornett approached, claimed he was a police officer and was arresting her for jaywalking.

He allegedly took the girl to an abandoned mobile classroom and sexually assaulted her but she managed to escape and get help from people at a nearby church.

Authorities say Cornett was arrested after his car got stuck in desert sand and following a fight with officers.

He’s could face up to life in prison if convicted.
