JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexually assaulting and impregnating his then-girlfriend’s teenage daughter.

The 40-year-old North Bergen man will also have to register as a sex offender.

His name wasn’t released to protect the identity of the victim, who was 14 when the assaults started and is now 25 and has a 9-year-old son by the man.

The sex assaults occurred in 2004 and the victim gave birth in 2005.

At the time, she said the child’s father was a high school classmate. But she testified at the man’s trial that she decided to come forward in 2012 after she saw him on the street and was “overcome with emotional distress.”

Authorities say DNA evidence proved the man was the boy’s father.
