HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - The Hobbs News-Sun has announced that Manny Marquez, an award-winning sports reporter and its former editor, has died.

The newspaper says Marquez died of natural causes at his Hobbs home on Friday. He was 70.

Marquez served as the News-Sun’s sports editor from 1970-94 and was one of the few Hispanic sports editors in the country at the time. He was known for humorous columns about area high school sports.

In 1995, Marquez switched to news and became the southeastern New Mexico publication’s editor, a post he held until his retirement in 2002.

News-Sun Publisher Daniel Russell says Marquez mentored several reporters when leading the News-Sun’s sports department as sports editor and later the entire newsroom as editor.

Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home in Hobbs.
