GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - Police in Gastonia say a mother of five was struck and killed by a car as she walked with her daughter on Mother’s Day.

Local media outlets report 31-year-old Crystal McDaniel was hit by a car around 2:36 p.m. Sunday. Family members were quoted as saying she was walking with her oldest daughter on a road with no sidewalks to see a relative.

According to police, the driver of the car may have been experiencing a medical emergency when he lost control and hit McDaniel. Authorities say after hitting the woman, his car struck a natural gas line.

McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was treated by emergency personnel and taken to a local hospital.

No charges have been filed. The Gastonia Police Department is investigating.
