WACO, Texas (AP) - A large piece of a cliff above Lake Whitney that was already marred by a giant crack in the limestone has crashed into the lake below during a severe storm.

Hill County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Hemrick tells the Waco Tribune-Herald (https://bit.ly/1crggo2 ) that because of the storm, no one was on the lake Sunday evening when it fell.

Officials had already been monitoring the cliff, which was teetering along a 150-foot-long crack. In March the crack widened to 6 feet across in some areas.

The area, which lines the back of homes, suffered from erosion that caught media attention last summer. As the cliff face began to collapse, a house was left dangling on the edge. That house was set on fire it before it could fall into the lake.
