ORRVILLE, Ohio (AP) - Rare twins who gained international attention when they were photographed holding hands moments after their birth last year in northeast Ohio have turned one.

The Akron Beacon Journal (https://bit.ly/1EtdB3K) reports that Jenna and Jillian Thistlethwaite, of Orrville, celebrated their first birthday this past weekend. The girl’s mother told the newspaper that the twins are healthy. Sarah Thistlethwaite says Jillian just took her first steps last Wednesday and Jenna is close.

The twins were born May 9, 2014, at Akron General Medical Centre in Akron. They shared the same amniotic sac and placenta in a rare birth condition called monoamniotic, or “mono mono.” Doctors say the condition occurs in about one of every 10,000 pregnancies.

Photos of the girls holding hands last year spread throughout the Internet, social media and television.
