COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - The Coast Guard says a daylong search has ended without finding the Vermont kayaker who went missing on Lake Champlain, although his kayak and some personal belongings were found on an island.

Coast Guard Lt. Scott McCann in Portland, Maine, says an intensive search for 25-year-old Sean Hawley of Arlington was conducted Monday on Stave Island where the kayak was found. Many agencies and volunteers were involved and searchers used dogs and a helicopter.

The island is about 2 miles from Colchester Point, where Hawley was last seen paddling a black, inflatable kayak about 11 p.m. Saturday. McCann says the case is still open but the all-out search is over.

Searchers originally thought a small skiff was missing from the island but learned otherwise later in the day.
