DALLAS (AP) - A fire official in North Texas says there is “significant damage” to homes and an unknown number of injuries after severe weather prompted reports of a tornado in the city of Van.

Van Fire Chief Jeff Hudgens says the small city sustained “some significant damage” to “multiple homes” and says agencies are responding to confirmed injuries. He did not have any further details on the number of injured or the extent of their injuries. There were no immediate reports of fatalities.

National Weather Service senior meteorologist Eric Martello says forecasters believe at least one tornado hit Van Sunday night. Two severe thunderstorm cells passed through the area.

A tornado watch is in effect for 15 counties in North Texas until midnight.

Van is about 30 miles northwest of Tyler.
