RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Some legislators want to add garbage trucks to the kinds of parked or standing vehicles that motorists must change lines or slow down for while approaching them under North Carolina’s “move over” law.

The Senate voted unanimously Monday night for a bill that in part places trash and recycling trucks on the list of emergency and public service vehicles already in the law. The current list includes first-responder vehicles with lights flashing and others with flashing lights being used to help stranded motorists, restore power or perform highway maintenance.

Violating the law already can result in fines or even a low-grade felony if serious injury or death results. The bill now goes to the House.
