POTSDAM, N.Y. (AP) - The merger of two upstate New York colleges has received approval from their boards.

Union Graduate College plans to merge into Clarkson University in a move the institutions say will bring together two financially strong entities and give students and faculty access to a richer pool of resources.

Under the plan approved by the colleges this week, Union Graduate College in Schenectady would become known as the Clarkson University Capital Region campus.

The merger would take effect Jan. 1. It needs final approval from the New York State Board of Regents and Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
