NEPTUNE, N.J. (AP) - Police officers from around New Jersey have gathered to remember colleagues who died in the line of duty.

The state’s Police Chiefs Foundation held its 31st annual memorial service in Ocean Grove’s Great Auditorium on Tuesday.

Gov. Chris Christie delivered a keynote address in which he thanked officers for their sacrifice. His speech came one day after President Barack Obama was in Camden, where he praised police efforts to improve relationships with a poor community struggling with violence.

Obama also announced the federal government is cutting back on shipments of military equipment to local police, because some equipment made for the battlefield is not appropriate for policing.

The announcement came nine months after complaints about officers using riot gear and armored vehicles to confront protesters in Ferguson, Missouri.
